Blast Furnace 6 Renovation at Tata Steel IJmuiden, The Netherlands.

Originally built in 1967, Blast Furnace 6 remains among the most efficient installations of its kind and is undergoing its final major renovation prior to Tata Steel’s transition toward alternative steelmaking technologies. The assignment documents specialized dismantling and reconstruction processes carried out while the furnace was shut down, within an active industrial site, alongside technical upgrades aimed at extending operational life and reducing emissions during the remaining years of operation.

The assignment covered the construction and integration of a LoTOx-based DeNOx system within an active production environment. The project represents a unique installation due to its significant reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions and its contribution to improved environmental performance, documented across multiple construction and commissioning phases over an extended period.

The CombiBio water treatment facility is a key supporting installation within Tata Steel’s emission reduction strategy. Designed to process nitrate-rich wastewater produced by the DeNOx installations, the facility enables an 80% reduction of NOx emissions at the Pellet Plant. Operating continuously within an active industrial environment, the CombiBio integrates biological treatment, filtration, and process control to meet increasingly strict environmental standards while maintaining uninterrupted production.
